Qatar based duo Charlie and Rob Frijns secured crucial points for their team, Frijns Structural Steel ME, after solid performances in Race 2, Round 5 of the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East to strengthen their third place position in the overall Team Championship standings. A consistent weekend of racing from the father-son duo in Dubai this weekend was a must ahead of the Season 7 finale in Bahrain in just two weeks’ time.

Rob Frijns followed up a Gold trophy in the bronze category in Race 1 with a Silver in Race 2, whilst son Charlie stayed with the top of the pack to finish fifth in Race 2 at the Dubai Autodrome.

“I had a good start in Race 2 but unfortunately in turn one I was on the inside of Ashkanani which meant that he kept his position coming out of the turn. I made a slight mistake coming out of the corner which allowed Abdulaziz AlFaisal to overtake me which left me in fifth position chasing the pack. I managed to catch them up but then in the fifth or sixth lap I locked my tires on one of the turns and after that I was fighting with the car trying to keep it on the track. The weekend hasn’t been great for me but I managed to finish as high as possible so I will now look ahead to Bahrain and hope to get some stronger performances there.”

Race 2 of Round 5 in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East was another nail-biting affair and with the drivers battling for positions early on you could sense the tension in and around the Dubai Autodrome’s incredible 4.29KM track.

For Ryan Cullen it was an almighty comeback after his spin out in Race 1, while Saudi Arabia’s Abdulaziz AlFaisal could celebrate a strong overall performance with his second podium finish in quick succession. Despite Kuwait’s Zaid Ashkanani missing out on the podium over the 14 intense laps, the young star is still well-placed for a top-three overall finish in the driver’s standings as the unique one-make series heads to Bahrain for the crucial and conclusive last round.

Regarded as the purest form of racing with all drivers competing in identical fifth generation Porsche 911 GT3 Cups, the unique one-make series consists of 12 races between November 2015 and March 2016. Season 7 concludes at the illustrious Bahrain International Circuit between 4th and 5th March.
